It is amazing how simple things get inflated out of all proportion.

When "I" reply to any list, I select Reply to all, and optionally knock out
the address(es) that I don't want to reply to. Having used many digests, I
personally feel that writing to both the poster and the list - while it does
give that person two copies is far better then them having to reply a day
later to the digest after the thread has posibly drifted way off the topic of
the initial question. I was surprised to hear from one of the menebers thet
they consider what I always thought of as a frendly help for those who may be
on digest as a breach of good maners

The FAQ maintainers list is to ask for help with the rather arcane art of
posting "frequently asked questions postings" to usenet, and related
information provision type questions.

The list will quite happily sit there for months, and then have a flurry of
activity when a question comes up. Very seldom, Like now, we will have a
meta discussion (it is generally about the list itself rather then the topic
of the list) that will drag on for days. Here in North America it is the
dead of winter, so perhaps this just an aspect of "seasonal affective disorder"

"Reply to" for this sort of list IMNSHO should go to the list. Someone asks
a question, those that have an idea about what the answer is reply. The
rough edges and half rights get polished and we all go back to providing the
world with information on those topics that we are so interested in that we
take the time to attempt to provide the first point of reference.

SOME LISTS DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. Look for Linux Managers or Sun managers.
There posts must be one of
a) a question or
b) a summary of the answers that one has received. There the default is NOT
to reply to the List, in fact it will get one Yelled at by the powers that be
if one were to post any answers to a question that one has not asked oneself.

Personally I find that I am often able to answer questions here, I post to
the list if I think that it might have a wider audience, or if I think what I
am suggesting may not be 100% of the problem. If I think that it is not (and
I am fully awake :> I will knock out the list address and just reply to the
sender.

Now can we all go back filling up the threads on Google Groups?
