Why?
Obviously, people are still reading the newsgroup and are interested in
using it occasionally for its original purpose. Just because people don't
post there very frequently dsen't mean that the group is somehow a waste.
Sounds to me like it's serving its purpose just fine.

That's what they did to create the newsgroup in the first place.
