Actually, AT&T varies the retention - I've seen articles retained in
news:alt.crafts.blacksmithing for 6 weeks or more; right now
news.answers has retained 422 articles (1 week's worth - and the same
retention as applies to ANY of the alt.binaries.pictues.* groups!)
