Strongly agree.

My computer-security/most-common-qs faq is primarily directed at
comp.security.unix and comp.security.misc, but it seemed reasonable to
cross-post it also to alt.security, which still contains some computer
security discussion...

(Alt.security's mandate is rather unclear these days, now that newsgroup
names are the only thing people look at. Alt.security was created when
The Powers That Be opposed open discussion of computer security issues in the
Big Seven as it then was... so it was created as an 'alt' group... but it
now has a big-7/8 home (for a very long time now)... and nowadays people
talk about all sorts of silly topics in alt.security from computer security
to home alarms to CCTV cameras to pepper spray, now that the computer-oriented
bias of newsgroup names is no longer clear so "security" doesn't clearly mean
"computer security" like it did when the newsgroup was created.)

So while I no longer read alt.security, the crosspost there seemed reasonable,
and I've had no complaints. But the crosspost to alt.security means that
it has to be cross-posted to alt.answers too. So what is basically a
two-group-oriented faq ends up being posted to six newsgroups:
comp.security.unix and comp.security.misc (the main point)
        alt.security (a reasonable crosspost)
        news.answers (serves the archiving functions)
comp.answers (having it posted here is not very useful)
alt.answers (having it posted here is completely useless)

If comp.answers and alt.answers (and all other big8.answers except
news.answers) were removed, we'd only be adding one crosspost to faqs,
rather than several, and it would be the one which serves a real function.
And my own faq would even be within the ridiculous G4 (if I understand
correctly what that does).

regards,
ajr
