Actually there are more good newsreaders than ever. See for example the
list at http://www.xs4all.nl/%7Ejs/gnksa/gnksa-evaluations.html. The
issue is that a higher percentage of net users are using crud like NN,
IE, OE, and web interfaces for reading news. (No slight intended on any
of those products for their main purposes. They are just bad
newsreaders, even when they are very good at their primary functions.)

There are even a number of very good *free* GUI newsreaders. The
problem is getting ISPs to install them and getting people out of the
web browser to use them.
