Maybe I spoke too soon. I got another email from the same guy, at another
address that I use for 3 other FAQs, and this time he named the specific
FAQs he was interested in. I think treating this guy as a spammer is too
harsh, even though he seems to want to get permission from all FAQ
maintainers to copy and distribute their work. How else is he going to get
your permission than by asking? How else is he going to ask but at your
published contact address? I see this guy's goals as no different than
someone who wants to start another FAQ mirror, but in a different form.
Maybe it is worth the risk of giving him permission, since he is now
promising to update his work monthly.

Just after sending this, I did get two copies of the same message from the
list... and not because someone replied to the list and to me directly. I
don't know why...

Here is Gary Wines' latest form letter to me, for your comparison:

Dear Sir,
Listed below to my understanding is the FAQ that you maintain.
I am putting together a manual that list these helpful FAQ. I
would like your permission to use your FAQ in this work.
I have found that many FAQ has very valuable information
that I believe would be of great help to others.
The main idea is to compile all the FAQ into one single file,
which I call EM's, Executable Manuals, then offer it free to
the public.
As you may know, I have 700 authors like yourself who maintain
FAQ, taking all of these and compiling into one executable
program would be an assets to the user.
I have done this type of work for the past six years, creating
several freeware manuals, maintaining them for updated
information.
Mostly it's a hobby, but I found with the first manual I did
that users all over the world had access to information that
was several manuals in text form, into one very simple browser
type program.
The manuals I currently have are located only in two servers
which gives me better control of keeping track of them, also
it allows for updates. Simtel.net, junoaccmail.org.
To give you a better idea of what will take place, first the
manual will be freeware, there will be no charge of any kind.
This manual will be updated once a month according to those
who update their FAQ file. The information on your FAQ will
not be changed in any way, the way you have on your web site
or at www.faqs.org will be the same. All copyright information
and author contact will be on your page as you have it.
If you have any other questions or would like more detailed
information please fell free to write. I also understand that
many authors' may not want this type of publication, but before
you say no, please ask questions and look at some of the current
work I have already done.

Thank You for at least looking over this, I look forward to hearing
from you.
