Only News, when I was looking using my Wifes account, and could not use
her e-mail...
Only FTP when using Minuette, (technicaly I had mail at this time, but I
can immagine that if I had still be using the borrowed account I may not
have been able ot deal with mailing for data.
Only Web, This is the default at work. (Wedo have mail but thorugh a
gateway that makes any Info by mail dicey.
only mail, when I was first using using the freenet and the news was at
first only local...
So any Plan should include a way to get arbitrary information bay all
methods. You never know, someone may need the "netscape" faq to get
netscape running..
In this regard, I think I have covered everything but a Mail responed.
I sugned up for one byut did not use it because it looked like it might
be a front for spam.
The other point I think we should consider is that of the five folks
besides me who have posted FAQs on various topics on Skating, all but
two of us have given up, Primarly because of the spam Problem. If you
put your address "outthere" on usenet you will get a large array of
folks thinking that you are interested in meeting "hot russian Girls"
and other come-ons in even worse taste. My wife has not posted her FAQ
since october and still gets this trash to the tune of a coupple of
e-mails a day. The other FAQs are still on the web, and In one case I
was asked by the writer to OMIT his e-mail in my FAQ just becasue of the
spam.
The need for editors is probaly met by the per review that listing the
FAQ on usenet brings, I am not sure how this need would be met in a
usenet-less world.
Tools to make maintaining more friendly, including perhaps forwarding
services that trap spam, E-mail Bots to spew out curent version by
e-mail. (I have tried to send a help message to the faq-by-mail server
at RTFM a coupple of times at work, and it times out on our e-mail, so
the machine must refuse a lot of e-mail connections ( or it can't deal
with the Weird Banyan Gateway)
I owuld love a way to update the FAQ by mail or web form to the server,
because my last weeks update seems to have gotten lost in the news spew
again. (checked on Dejanews, altavista, altavista.ca, and talkway and
no sign of the posting..I have asked the news admin at achilles to
check. When my wofe was posting we tried the Autoposter, but found it
was frustrating to use, and it seemed to want the archives to be part1
part2 etc when Karen had used descriptive names.
Anyway, I may have other ideas later.
