TO>When the other 'FAQ' appeared, and I replied that I had spent many
TO>days rewriting my FAQ, the other person's response was, HA HA, you
TO>think I spent any time writing that FAQ?

I maintain The Monster Truck FAQ (and The Net-Tamer FAQ). This year has seen
a proliferation of Monster Truck sites and many of these sites have their own
FAQ while some chose to publish a link to my FAQ at Landfield.COM (FAQS.org).

Now if one of the nationally know Monster Truck organizations decided to post
their FAQ to USENET, most readers would consider their FAQ to be more
official than mine. Even though I have news.answers approval and they don't!
And if they wanted to, they could seek approval and post to the *.answers
groups. That's USENET and that's not a bad thing in itself.

TO>Considering all he had to do was go to MY WEB PAGE, SAVE my HTML
TO>PAGE as TEXT, then stick his name on it, I think that shows who
TO>spent the most time writing the FAQ.

If some joker took my FAQ and posted it as his own I'd be extremely angry and
would seek legal counsel. My counsel would probably calm me back down to a
sensible state and tell me to write a letter first or something to that
effect.

TO>His FAQ promotes ILLEGAL Activity...

Doesn't matter how much time I spent on mine Vs. the time they spent on
theirs. Doesn't matter if their opinions differ from mine. Doesn't matter if
they Publish `Fables and Myths' as opposed to my `Factual Information'. The
competition is based on perception. But if I put my energy into being the
best, most factual, most complete or most extensive I'll still receive an
audience.

TO>I will continue to report mindspring.com, I have sent EMAILS to ALL
TO>publications that continue to NAME mindspring.com as the BEST ISP,
TO>and inform them of their choice!!

You can pursue that course to your heart's desire but I'd put my efforts into
solving the real problem of either attracting and keeping my readership or
the theft of intellectual property issue.

TO>here is what they say is the best ISP:

Is this the real reason you're angry? I doubt the ISP you mentioned coerced
this guy into posting any FAQ and if they tossed his account he'd just move
to another ISP or use a USENET posting account elsewhere.

TO>When someone using a name to imply they are the FAQ Maintainer and
TO>tells people to go to a personal web page for the FAQ, is ABUSING
TO>the Use Policy, when mindsprings use policy clearly states to get
TO>the FAQ in news.answers...

TO>The abuse policy says: It is prohibited to Forge or Impersonate
TO>another email address or user.... Isn't it forging my aft-lfaq@usa.
TO>net address by using what he does? Is it not impersonating me by
TO>implying he is the FAQ maintainer?

He is being a person who sees himself as a FAQ maintainer. When I look up
myself on a search engine I get entries for some guy who is a pioneer in the
computer industry. I hope my FAQs don't detract from his professional
standings in anyway. And if HE decided to use a E-mail address that
implied he was a FAQ maintainer what's it to me. I have my own name in my
FAQ and that's where my readers will reply to. His readers can write to him
at his address <GRIN>.

TO>Excuse me for being a PUBLISHER who owns a PUBLISHING COMPANY, and
TO>I guess the rest of you are just novice authors who have no
TO>knowledge of anything at all concerning publishing laws.
TO>I guess I'm a PROFESSIONAL dealing with a bunch of amateurs....

Your point???

TO>I wrote and published the FIRST FAQ, when I set up my Web Page,
TO>that's where I moved the FAQ, and that's where I told the newsgroup
TO>users to go to get the FAQ.

Well, did they listen? Do they still?? If not maybe you need to rethink the
project just a little.

TO>People use my NAME to post messages to the newsgroups, which I
TO>never see, because those domains are FILTERED out as SPAM by my
TO>news server.

Find a better news server!

TO>This Terry Ortman, is the OWNER of STARFLEET SOFTWARE Company,
TO>ORTMAN Enterprises, and is listed in Marquis Who's Who in Midwest
TO>America, and Marquis Who's Who in Media and Communications. We
TO>publish newsletters, Computer Software, and we even published a
TO>weekly newspaper here throughout Central Illinois, and I will NOT
TO>tolerate being attacked by others who seemingly think that by
TO>winning a KOTM award they are a better person or more educated than
TO>me....

HUH?!? Kook of the Month or not. Listed in Who's Who or not. Sells software
or Soup, what's the point?

TO>Since they don't use my ISP, they must be paying more than $9.95 a
TO>month, so that just goes to show where their knowledge is....

So, If they used a certain Free E-mail service, a free Web Host and updated
the site through E-mail they'd be smarter than all of us???

Later,

Jeff Hawkins
