I maintain the alt.sex.movies FAQ and quite a lot of people want to know
how to get adult movies (go figure! ;-)
There are a few companies listed in the FAQ and they got there by one of
two ways:
(1) They are active contributors to the group. Blowfish, a mail order
house out of San Francisco, is an active contributor to the group, and
their only advertising within it is in their .sig which is less than 4
lines. Spotlight Video is run by an adult film actress who contributes a
behind the scenes perspective to the group and hardly mentions her
commercial interests. Other advertisers spam the group daily and are not
mentioned because they don't contibute anything other than noise to the
group. The best advertisers frequent alt.sex.erotica.marketplace and keep
it out of a.s.m.
(2) Recommendations from a lot of people in the group. In maintaining the
FAQ, I am constantly on the lookout for different things to include in it,
and a prime topic is a good mail order comapny. I don't keep lists of
good stores in cities and stuff, as I feel that is way too limiting. Mail
order is pretty universal (local laws may apply, of course) and I keep
four or five companies listed. All those companies have come recommended
by members of the community that I trust.
I did have one company ask for me to put them in the FAQ, but they didn't
really offer anything to the group, so I didn't put them in the FAQ. My
document is not for commercial use. While it contains sections on where
to buy adult materials, I prefer to treat those companies in it as having
the "asm FAQ seal of approval." So, I won't put a company in just because
they ask. They need to have some sort of relationship with the group, be
it by actively participating or by coming recommended by more than a few
members.
Companies that spam the group will NEVER make it into the FAQ.
Hope this helps...
