mailing list versus newsgroup

I am a recent subscriber to this mailing list. The question I am about to ask
may have been asked and answered in the past, but let me ask it again.

Why is this set up as a mailing list rather than a newsgroup? (Or is there a
corresponding newsgroup?) I would prefer a newsgroup to avoid loading my
mailbox when I am away on trips (something that occurs frequently). I am sure
there is a good reason for the present setup, and I am curious to find out.
