In a certain context. The context of Usenet and the
Internet, specifically. When Walnut Creek packaged up my
FAQ and sold it on their CD-ROM, suddenly that implied
context was lost, since the people buying the CD-ROMs are
almost certainly not going to be the people who already have
net access. I would have wished a chance to polish,
rewrite, or restructure my FAQ at least minimally to reflect
the new audience.

This is a change that seems endemic to the net. People are
trumpeting "unlimited access" and scrambling all over
themselves to offer convenient access to people who are less
and less cognizant of computers and net culture. I wouldn't
complain, except that the people who set the standards and
make the pathways aren't being given a chance to make
preparations for these vast new audiences in a way that
might ease the transition a little. Well done, Walnut
Creek.
