See reader questions & answers on this topic! - Help others by sharing your knowledge If you want to display still images on the World Wide Web, you have a choice of using JPEG or GIF; those two formats are by far the most widely supported by WWW browsers. (We can hope that PNG will soon become popular enough to replace GIF on the Web; see http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/ for PNG info.) For most images it's pretty obvious which format to choose (see "[3] When should I use JPEG, and when should I stick with GIF?"). JPEG's ability to trade off file size against image quality is especially helpful for trimming download times of Web photos. But there's a good many things to know that are specific to Web design, and even specific to the currently-most-popular browsers. This FAQ doesn't try to cover Web graphics design.
