The answer is largely to do with fonts and layout. Things on screen work
best laid out in one column, things in print work best laid out in two.
As to fonts, if you can come up with a font that's suitable for both
screen and print, you could make millions.
Web browsers aren't capable of making the sorts of decisions necessary to
turn a document engineered for display on-screen and turn it into a
document engineered for display on paper.
