I think there's a whole range of possibilities ... at the extreme, see
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes/faq/part3/section-21.html. In this
case I combined information from six different people (on a topic I
didn't know much about myself) and from a couple of books. I simply
wrote the article under my name and credited the contributors at the
end.
In another case, I included two long quotes, slightly edited, with a
few remarks of my own to tie it together.
Really depends on the circumstances. If I can just quote and then add
to it, I will. When I need to rewrite, I have to take a different
approach. I try to make the credits explicit when the person has
contributed information but not the actual words.
