I think that's very much a matter of individual style. While a large
number of FAQ maintainers do act as a sort of "librarian", there are
quite a few that are more - shall we say - "effusive".
My method of dealing with hostile criticism is to post *one* message
of rebuttal. If the guy comes back with more cogent arguments I
consider them on their merits, but if he switches to ad-hominem
attacks (as trolls usually do) I add him to my newsreader's "exclude"
file and get on with my life. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution
(and it may not be appropriate in many circumstances) but it certainly
keeps my blood pressure down.
One thing you might want to consider is whether the complainant has
garnered any support from other newsgroup posters. If he's a lone
voice shouting in the wilderness, the chances are that readers of the
newsgroup will learn to ignore him. If there are a bunch of people
agreeing with him, you might have more of a problem.
At the end of the day it's *you* that is publishing the FAQ, so you
have to be comfortable with its contents.
