Various approaches to completely overhauling the moderation setup
have been brought up over the past couple of years. Kent Landfield
asked the active moderators (me :) several times about turning it
into a database-backed, web-interfaced system. It's always sounded
like a dandy idea to me, but nobody's ever had the necessary
combination of time, inclination, and knowledge to do it.
I have the inclination and part of the knowledge: I know how the
system works now (or how it did a year or so ago), and what needs it
has to fill. But I don't have the time nor the technical skills to
move it to the web. To anyone who does have those other pieces, I
offer whatever help I can give in the form of answering questions
about the present setup.
In all honesty, though, I think the best way to know what needs to be
done is to do it for a while. That is, once the current group of new
moderators is solidly entrenched, they could train one or two others.
The latter people would *quit* moderating as soon as they learned it,
and concentrate on writing new tools. We may not need 10 active
moderators, but there's no way the same small group can both keep up
with moderation tasks and revamp the system.
On a separate note, regarding unchanged FAQs, there are at least some
that have neither changed nor grown significantly stale in a couple
of years. I haven't modified the Ferret FAQ in more than three
years, but ferrets haven't changed a whole lot in that time either.
I wouldn't mind being asked periodically if the FAQ is still active,
but I don't think it should be unilaterally declared historical.
