I have a slightly simpler solution than overhauling the entire FAQ process
for those people currently using the broken FAQ autoposter, but having a
fairly reliable news server at their disposal.
I myself became quite frustrated with the lack of sufficiently powerful
newreaders shortly after I lost the dial-up connection on my machine at
home (which did have a sufficently powerful newsreader), and was forced to
use a Win-box at work to do the posting. My solution was to write a simple
Java application which sends articles direct to a news server from a series
of text files containing all headers. It doesn't do much handshaking, so it
won't work well on dodgy news links, but it may provide a solution for some
people. The caveat is that you have to create all your headers manually,
which includes dynamic information like date and message ID (in correct
format). I have a program (not Java) which does this for my FAQ, but if
there is sufficient interest, I may incorporate dynamic header generation
in the Java program.
If anyone would like a copy of my program, just e-mail me. If demand is
high enough, I will place it on my website. It needs a Java runtime
environment, such as Sun's, which now comes with Netscape 6. It runs from
the command line, but only takes four parameters- the news server host
name, the file name prefix, the first part number and the last part number.
All files are expected to have the extension txt and be in the same
directory as the program.
