Pointers are very useful: they're brief, so they don't eat bandwidth. They direct interested readers to useful material.
Personally, I post a pointer to the tea FAQ every couple of weeks or so. I get no complaints (in fact, people sometimes post responses to the pointer to thank me for posting it).
