To be honest, the best thing to do is to get Leslie Lamport's book
"LaTeX: a document preparation system". It's a good introduction to
basic use LaTeX and will give you an excellent grounding for more
complex tasks.

However, since as a type preparation program LaTeX is beyond wonderful,
it has a large amount of features that Lamport's book can't go in to,
particularly given that it's extensible with extra packages. As you get
more advanced you may also want to consider "The LaTeX Companion" by
Goosens, Mittelbach and Samarin, which goes into a lot of these extra
packages in some detail.

Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible.
Instead, try and realise the truth.
The spoon effect will be added later using some sort of SGI workstation.
