I agree entirely.

Kent's action was appropriate. It was simply his choice of
words that offended. As faq-maintainers, we, more than
others, should differeniate between content and means.
Protests against "abuse" should not seek to disguise
objections to content.

As the faq-maintainers list was defunct, Kent justifiably
sent an announcement about the new list to all posters to
news.answers. Unfortunately, he told recipients they are on
a list. He should have simply said the list exists and
invited recipients to subscribe.

As it was, people who didn't want to be on the list could
unsubscribe. (The majordomo filter shouldn't pick up that
word after the tenth line or so.) REALLY unsubscribe. NOT
the phony spam disclaimer. Well, how much trouble was that?
Not even approaching the trouble we take to maintain and
post our FAQs.

Perhaps, the burden should have been on the subscribers
rather than the unsubscribers, but in the long run the
difference is trivial.
