And as long as the source of the edits are clearly identified .

With regards to changing of the text - the digital signatures mentioned would
at least let folk know when the body of the msgs had been modified. However,
it wouldn't let people know what was modified.

Most moderated lists that I have seen either modify only the envelope
and possibly drop signatures, or identify clearly what parts of the body
were modified by the moderator. Perhaps the reason I have not seen any
of the other type is that I just wouldn't participate in a list where
someone was modifying my messages without my permission and without a
clear indication that the message had been modified.
