i am not a lawyer either (as some others who have given their thoughts)
but regarding the legality issue, how about altavista? altavista is dec's
web search site, which lets you search through hundreds of usenet articles
for a person (or anything else). i wonder if they have faced such a
situation or are already aware of the legalities (in which case, such an
archive is legal!).

my question to dragomir is: can you not purge just this person's articles
without making the entire archive useless? if not for legality issues, i
think ethically it may be a better idea to honour his wishes...
