I believe I read an article (clarinet, I think) which reported that
the Deja News folks either had, or were working on a way to allow
people to remove certain articles (or all articles) from their
public archives.

This makes sense, in light of the current copyright situation as I
understand it, and as others have mentioned: That the author, in
transmitting to Usenet, does not lose his copyright on the articles.
Here, so far as I know, retaining the copyright means retaining the
right to retransmission.

To my knowledge, this has never gone to any court. What will happen
when it goes to court is anybody's guess, but the logical thing to do
(IMO) is to declare Usenet a "special case" where loss of copyright is
implied unless the author explicitly chooses to retain it. Which
would inevitably lead to the optional Copyright: Retained header in
all civilized newsreaders...

Disclaimer-- I'm not a lawyer. I'm not even pretending to be a
lawyer.
