Well, since "everyone else is doin' it"... <grin>
I've been on alt.music.smash-pumpkins for a while, and sure enough, the same
questions got asked many times. One question in particular (about the Depeche
Mode cover, and where to find it, etc.) got asked so many times, everyone was
mumbling about needing a FAQ for some time, and since I've found myself
answering the same questions over & over, I finally said "THAT'S IT! I'm making
a FAQ for this group!" :> The FAQ itself contains a little blurb on that
question, and as soon as it was finished, I took great pride in being the first
to be able to yell "RTFM!!! :)" But of course I still answered it, since the
FAQ wasn't really known yet. It started out mostly with a few questions, with
pointers to other sites for the lyrics, tab, various user homepages, etc., and
quickly grew to ~45K, and keeps getting more stuff added.
But, I finally got approval from *.answers (it's been posted for 2 months now)
so it'll be archived. :) Got the notice (and placed on this list) a few days
ago, actually... :)
As far as starting off without really knowing much, I guess I did that. I just
got into the group last fall, and most of my information has come from reading
other things (posts, and the already-maintained discography and bootlist, which
I combined before the FAQ into a medium index by song), etc. I haven't checked
out any of the books they have out, and unfortunately haven't seen them in
concert yet, but I hope that will change. The person in charge of all their fan
mail logged in for a week (albeit on AOL) so I emailed her... <grin> I guess I
just started to really really REALLY like the group, as well as the thought of
"net.fame" that I'd get (and I continuously get "fan mail" from people who
stumble on my FAQ or web site (I do all the .html by hand, too! <g>) and of
course everyone on the newsgroup and mailing list knows who I am... :) But
until the band writes back asking about "us `Internet' people" (as we were all
referred to in a fanclub newsletter) I think I'll probably be out of the other
big thread here. :> Oh well.
One last note on the time spent: reading through the mailing list and
newsgroup (I don't skip a single message on either) takes quite some time-
usually more than an hour a day, and adding parts to the faq doesn't take too
long, although I have to add it to both the text & .html versions, but clip-
board paste works well enough for that... :>
L8er...
