How did I get into the business of maintaining a FAQ?

I participate in the DEAF-L list, which discusses deaf issues. This list
is served by a listserver, and is available also as the Usenet group
bit.listserv.deaf-l.

This list is characterized by having a perennial argument between people
who advocate Oralism/integration of the deaf with hearing society/denial
of Sign Language/cochlear implants - and people who advocate Sign
Language/Deaf Culture etc.

I soon got tired of the repeating arguments. So I volunteered to write a
FAQ which summarizes the points already made, so that the arguments will
be able to make a *real* progress.

The DEAF-L FAQ now consists of six parts. One of the parts, maintained
by Chris deHahn rather than me, contains pointers to Internet resources
related to deafness and this is the most popular part. Another part
contains information related to using PCs as TTYs (to help the deaf
communicate by the phone). The sixth part (which I send upon request,
and with disclaimer that it is *very* controversial) summarizes the
arguments, and is slanted toward the Sign Language/Deaf Culture camp -
because the other camp was quick to flame me by atomic-powered
flamethrowers - but slow to contribute material.

When I posted the sixth part of the FAQ to DEAF-L, erupted a "world
war" between the two camps of the DEAF-L participants and the moderator
had to intervene to calm down things a bit.

Nowadays, the arguments continue but more options (such as Cued Speech)
are being discussed, rather than rehash of the old arguments.
