I would oppose such a change. The intent of rtfm.mit.edu:/pub/usenet
is to archive Usenet postings. Changing the algorithm as you suggest
would mean that there could be much material in the archives which
were never transmitted through Usenet mechanisms. This opens a large
can of worms (both procedural and legal) which I'd rather not see us
faced with.

Issuing a FORCE command immediately after an UPDATE command does not
accomplish exactly the same effect as the suggested "feature", but I
believe that that's "good enough" for most FAQs.

One of the *.answers moderators will see to possibly updating the
faq-server help file to clarify that the faq-server keeps copies which
are independent of the archive's copies (and in particular, what
UPDATE does and does not accomplish).
