Um, before we get to the point of using the proceeds from this to replace
all former NSF funding, perhaps we should find out just what range of
dollar amounts is in the offing? Based on my own knowledge of average
book advances (*not* Stephen King or John Grisham level books, which this
ain't), I'll be surprised if the advance offered the author/editors is
into five figures, and very surprised if it's over a low five figure
sum (and if so, I'm getting out some book proposals ASAP!).
Btw, I posted about this offer to rec.arts.comics.misc, whose FAQ I
maintain, to get opinions. People there were suggesting a cut of the
advance go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Had to point out that
dividing the expected advance by number of FAQs potentially included
would result in a pretty insignificant amount. Helping rtfm sounds fine,
but I'd advice against coming up with multiple worthy sources and
splitting, since there won't be much at all for each source in any
event short of the book making the NYT best seller list.
