Often spots on a dog's tongue mean it is a mutt but not always. I think this more commonly happens in labs. Their markings are so distinct that it shouldn't be too hard to tell if they are pure bred or not.

My dog has spots on the tip of his tongue and he is Champion Belgian Malinois. So my friends as you too can learn that some spots, as long as they are not raised or protruding from the surface of the tongue,  are nothing more than black pigmentation caused by microscopic melanin granules.

I have some pure bred German Shepard puppies that a few have one small light purple spot on their tongue, but it is just pigment. Just as the roof of all their mouths have pink and purple on them.

I have a Redbone/Lab mix. His tongue is spotted black and pink...and I have been told similar things to what you ALL have been saying. According to the person we adopted him from, he is the product of a pure Redbone and a pure Lab.

We love him no matter what!

My dog is a German Shepherd/Pit Bull mix and she has spots all over her tongue.  Both parents were purebreds.  No chow in her at all.  Spots are just normal pigmentation like birth marks on a human!

Black spots on a dog's tongue do not mean your dog is mixed, part Chow-Chow, or any of that. It simply means that there is extra pigment on the dog's tongue.

Black spots are common in most breeds, including Labradors, Malinois, German Shepherds, and pretty much any other breed you can think of. Some cats also have them.

I have a yellow Lab and his tongue is solid black, there is not an ounce of mixed anything in him! He is very smart but does NOT like water. WE raised him from a pup so he has never been mistreated or anything concerning water. I think dogs will be dogs! No one or no dog is the same!
