It could be just the brushes on the regulator. The regulator is the oval black thing on the back of the alternator. Take a screwdriver and remove the two screws that hold it on the alternator. Got to a junk yard and pull one off of another car. Replace the old one with the "new" one. My alternator light came on in my 86 Golf. I pulled the regulator and noticed that one of the brushes was severely worn. I replaced it and I put another 100K miles on the alternator (still working).
