Is it true that a bull mastif is a cross between a rottweiler and a red nose pit bull???

No. Mastiff's one of oldest purebred breeds. Various types of Mastiff's have been "bred" over the centuries to create the; Bullmastiff, Neopolitan Mastiff, Japaneese Mastiff and perhaps more, I'm no expert. Though many were bred as fighting dogs they are among the gentlest of large breeds. Origins go back to Roman times. Rottweiller,s I know quite abit about, having owned (& in the past, bred)them for more than a decade. They too date to Roman times and were used as pack/guard dogs for the Roman army. They ranged throughout Europe and remained popular as guard, herding & general farm work dogs. Rottweiler'shave been (unfortunately) over-bred (by American'smostly)& the integrity of the breed has largely been destroyed. If interested in a Rott be sure to study the German breed standards and PLEASE do not buy a dog from some moron advertising "150lb" sire/etc.-they`re not supposed to be anywhere near that size. 120 is a BIG male by proper standards. They are well tempered and EXTREEMLY loyal animals. Enough rambling, feel free to e-mail me w/questions or rants! Oh yeah, don't know squat about Pitbull'sexcept; it isn't the animal, it is the owner.

NO, A bull Mastiff is a crossing between a mastiff and a English Bulldog. This a long, long time ago when English Bulldogs were a little bit bigger...

a bullmastiff has absolutely nothing to do with rottweilers...this is a 1924 breed obtained by crossing Mastiffs with Bulldogs in england...

and 'whatever'- what is this dog u speak of? a pitt mastiff? if its what i think you are talking about its a bandogge mastiff- which isnt even a pure breed dog anyway...and can be all sorts of weights...just depending on the 2 dogs it is crossed with...and they are not any larger than the rott or bullmastiff though

mr4speed- 120lbs for a rottweiler i would say is relatively small- its an ok weight but i would prefer my rott to be around 140lbs...ive seen rotts nearly 200lbs before and they were not fat

The BullMastiff is a breed about 75 years old. It is a mix between an English bulldog and a Mastiff. As far as the Rott goes if you have one around 120 lbs it could be a German Rott, they tend to run smaller and actually appear almost like a lab.

FYI the original mastiff is now considered the "OLD ENGLISH MASTIFF" it is considered the heaviest breed with a range of 150 to 200 lb and even larger... but that is the standard. The mastiff dates back before the Romans and many consider it to be one of the 7 traceable lines for all of todays breeds. It is very possible that many breeds Rots, pits, most sled dogs, ect... all have mastiff way way back there lineage

My aunt does have a Rott that is 180...according to his vet.  One of the largest dogs that her insurance compnay ever dealt with.  Although he is up in age now, her home owners refused to sign her unless she had him neutered.
She has lived in the same neighborhood in Chicago for over 30 years.  Her house averaged being robbed once every year until 1997 when she got Bo (the Rott)...her home has not been robbed since.
THERE ARE #180 Rotties out there.

It's very difficult to tell how fat a dog is until it's obese. To say your (?)lb Rott isn't 'fat' is a meaningless statement. It could be firm, well-formed, and high energy within a huge range of leanness/fatness. That said, a lean, 180-200lb is either an anomaly or a myth. My neighbor has a 160lb Cane Corso that -dwarfs- every Rott I've ever seen. (Incidentally, Cane Corsos most certainly ARE mastiffs.)

I own a bull mastiff/lab mix.she is beautiful and large weighing 115 lbs. she is very protective over our children and strangely over our other animals 3 cats and my husbands dog who is younger. brandi is up in age 6 years now(we had her since she was 7 weeks old) she is the best companion i have ever had.(and i have owned rotts, dobermans,g.shepards, and a wolf hybrid)from my research i have found that these dogs b.mastiffs--have been around since the Romans and they are 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog.they are very loyal to their family --brandi has already proved that when someone broke into our home-even after being shot by the robber she still brought him down
and gave us time to grab our guns and get to our children.during all this happening, she was bleeding very bad--lung shot stomach shot
and refused to let go of "her"attacker.it wasn't until the police arrived that she finally let go and it was the police officers
who noticed how bad she was injured and rushed her to the emergency room.if it wasn't for her we may have been injured--if not killed--we later found out that the man was planing to kill us just to see if he can do it--he was on drugs. so if you own a bull mastiff you will know sooner or later just how much he/she loves you--they will give there life for you.these dogs were breed for protection and to be silent stalkers--you don't know they are there until you turn around. and the intruder that brandi brought down--well he said that he never knew we had a dog and she surprised him that is why he shot her but she had a death grip on his arm and with her weight he was pend down.so i send koodos to all the mastiffs and b. mastiff mixes.

My mother has two wonderful bull mastifs. They are sisters from the same litter. When they were pups my mom let them come up on her lap, treated them like babies. They grew up and are about 150 lbs each. They are the most wonderful dogs in the whole world. I go to my mom's house now, not to visit her but to say hello to the dogs. I have three children ages 9,7 and 2. The dogs are six months older then my youngest,he rides on their backs and the dogs love the attention. They are so protective over their family. When my husband, me and our kids were staying at my mothers house, my husband had forgotten his house key one night. He had to climb through a window, he was met at the window by a mouth full of teeth. Once he started talking to the girls, they realized who he was and started licking his face and saying hello. After that we knew we never had to worry about introders!

Oh, we have a lot of "challenged" people just typing without thinking...you people have the internet, do research! Cane Corsos ARE Italian mastiffs, descendants from the Neapolitan mastiff. Uhhh Rottweilers can get to be 200 lbs if their fat. I'd never take a 200Lb Rott, it definetly couldnt do what it was bred to do. I bet these people believe the stories of the gators in the toilets in NY...Presas are not big a** pit bulls...lol...Please don't breed your dogs if you have no idea of their breed standards. And there's no "new breed" Bull-Rott Bull Mastiff...lets just call that one a mutt.

My goodness, ive never seen so many confused an wrong answears in my life,im sorry,LoL..But its true..Rotts over 150s would be heavily discouraged, you can always make a dog breed larger by selective large to largest mates, an alot of people do,sacraficeing health, bone structure an lifespan of their breed..An I know you dont make a Pitbull outta irish pitbulls an Am bulldogs.lol..the type has cross of terrier an bulldogs, but no certain types were ever definite only guesses,by what was available at that time..an what worked, more than likely alot of diff types of both..

the dog which looks like a pitbull head, bullmastiff body and reaches 225lbs would probably be a fila, Im used to have one and watch out for it. Very unpredictable. I have bred pits, bullmastiffs and rots, and this thing was a terror in comparison, it would give no warning an then be all over you. It attacked my best friend one day when we were boxing and almost finished him for good. If you want a incredible compassionate dog that will protect with its life either get a bullmastiff or bully rot cross, loveable yet fierce when need be

I had a Bully...like all story goes she was as protective and like a bodyguard. We live in a terrace hse with fence and gate and there was this time an intruder came in thru the front door. He shook the gate but bully just sat there. HE was not aware that there was a dog and walk straight into the main door when my niece shouted. As soon as that happened, bully jumped from a lying down position to pounce on the poor intruder. He must have felt a ton of bricks hitting him.

I have always been a fan of the Bull Mastiff and have wanted one for years.  My husband and I chose a little dog first, since we didn't have a whole lot of room.  Well, now we have two Pekingese and I just brought home a Neopolitan Mastiff.  At 3 months old he is about 40 lbs.  His paws are huge but he seems to be on the lean side right now.

He certainly is a "silent stalker".  You can hear the pekingese coming a mile away but Jake will knock you down and you would never have known he was in the room!

Mastiffs are a great breed all around, especially for dog lovers.  I do not, however, recommend getting a dog simply because "it looks mean."  The Presa Canierio is a beautiful but muscular dog.  If you aren't going to train it properly and give it the care it needs you are doing the dog a disservice.

I have a 8 month old OLD ENGLISH MASTIFF and she weighs in about 115 pounds.  I am 5 foot 12 inches tall and when i stand her up on her hind legs she is pretty close to being eye to eye with me.  keep in mind OLD ENGLISH MASTIFFS dont start to fill out until the age of 1 and 1/2 years and they dont reach full height until 1 year. Her father was 255 pounds (30 inches tall at withers)and mother was 200(27 inches tall at withers).  I have seen rottweilers that were supposed to be 150-200 pounds and im telling you that they were no where near the size of the mastiffs that i saw that day.  My aunt has a huge male rottweiler 4 years old that weighs in at 130 pounds hes a little overfed but her dog is no where near the size of the mastiffs at the breeders where i purchased my dog.  if you have never seen a full grown PURE BRED adult male mastiff then i would say go to a breeder and look at one. they are enormous.  im 220 pounds and i was scared crapless of the father of my dog.  i felt like at any time he could just pick me up and throw me a mile.  he was in a cage that had 3 chain link fences welded together and there was a spot in the fence where he had literaly pushed his entire head through the fence. i have a picture with him and his head is as big as my whole waist(size 38 waist)  there is a reason why they say "As a lion is to a cat, a Mastiff is to a dog"

Well i have had an English Mastiff. GREAT dog by far the best ever, for me at least. As far as i have been able to find the English Mastiff came from a dog used by the Egyptians for hunting lions. Thus came the size. It is thought to be one of the few true lines of what we call a dog next to a wolf. They can weigh up to about 200lb for a male BUT i have seen first hand a breeder in Canada BC have one to about 300lb (did not like the look of it tho...) On the part with the Rots, what has been said above is true, The Rotties have just about as much blood line of the Mastiff as do as a pug, at first thought that may sound like a joke but its true, a pug is a mastiff and so is a Rot BUT bred to be their breed over time. Rots can be breed to 200 pounds but i could do that to a lab over 100 years too. This is not to say that a 200lb Rot is a crap dog, some people take pride in what they do with their dogs, I saw a 12 year old 195lb Rot that could run faster then me... (im 21 and in shape :)

And for the Pitbull X Mastiff. Its a breed that has come around in the past few years only bred at first for one thing, Fighting. This dog, in many cases is not safe (being that 90% is due to who owns the dog and 10% to the breed). My Mastiff i have now can take down a deer. Mixing this with a dog that has been inbread to be vishes is never a good idea. You may have this kind of dog and think it nice and loving and safe, but one day this dog may be just sick or the dog next door may be in heat and snap mastiff were bread to go for the neck, Pits have a lock jaw... your dead. ^o^

G'Day
I read the articles on Bullmastiff'sand would like to ask some advice.
I have two cats that I have rescued from a refuge last year, and now have
put my name to bring home a male BM that I saw in the same refuge today.
He is about to be desexed and I would say from experience of growing up with
different dog breeds all  my life, that he would be between  18 months to
two years old. He has a lovely nature at first glance, but that was through
a cage so I am very concerned about how I could make this work with the two
pets I own already.
Do you have any ideas or methods that I can try to make them get along
together once I bring him home? The thought of having to take him back inside
the 10 day refund brings on failure.
Hope you can give some advice.
Kind Regards,
Glenn.

why don't all of you just quit quarreling like children and saying that you know somebody that has this dog or that dog...don't talk about the dog unless you own it.  If you want info on the damned things go to www.dogbreedinfo.com and look it up and stop saying what you think the dog size should be...breeder or not it's a guarantee that the dog has something wrong with it as opposed to the standards in the site
and personally I like mastiffs, I just acquired one that is half bull mastiff and half lab and is 30 pounds at 3 months old and it by no standards small in height

I have a PIT BULL mixed with a BULL MASTIFF that I had gotten in Florida when I was visiting my dad. I brought her back on the plane with me when she weighed about 4 pounds. Now only 5 months later she weighs 89 pounds. They are really nice looking dogs and I am planning on breeding her soon with a bull mastiff. She isn't agressive at all but is still only 7 months old. before I had decited to bring her back with me I did alot of research on these dogs and I am only 13 so I am no expert, but I read that The Bullmastiff is known as the “Game Keeper's Dog.” and these dogs were used as guard dogs by the English game keepers to catch poachers. it is a cross between a BULLDOG and a MASTIFF, which makes for a very strong, large dog. It needs determined training and will be a good guard dog. Above all else, it must be controlled. And you should be sure to start your puppy's training early, because these dogs grow to be an animal of enormous size and powerful strength. But despite its enormity and weight, it is a very affectionate, loyal and loving animal. It does not need a lot of exercise, just a walk or a play in the yard.  It can live in an apartment and it will be happy with a walk. And Little or no grooming is required.

Crikey. There is a lot of uneducated rubbish on here. Don't you guys read at all?

If people breed from out-sized dogs that are in excess of the breed standard they are not furthering the breed, only their own machismo.

no it is not true a bull mastiff is 60% english mastiff and 40% english bulldog breed in the 1800s to stop poaching on english estates however if you are looking for a mastiff you should get an english masttiff they are an ancient breed thats ancestors fought in the coloseum and were used as war dogs by the ancient celtic tribes of britain before the english even arrived

SIZE, SIZE, SIZE!!!!!!!!  Is that ALL you people think about? Man oh man.  If more people cared about quality and appropriate, responsible pet ownership there would be a lot less aggressive large dogs out there.  All I see on this posting board are a bunch of immature pet owners that need to grow up.

I have been researching dogs as we are thinking of getting one as a family pet. I have researched the bull mastif and from what I am reading think that it would be a good addition to our family and a good protector. My question is... I have found a person selling a bull mastif cane corso mix for $500. Is this mix going to be as friendly and protective as a straight bred mastif and is that price fair?

it seems as though you people only care about size of the dog.  Why?  People have their own opinions on the best dogs.  I cannot stand pittbulls simply because they are overbred where I am from and all you see is sorority girls and their pitts.  I own two bullmastiffs and they were both raised to be gentle. My female is 133 pounds, A german import and my male is 144 both are extremely lean.  My female dwarfs just about every rott that I have ever seen (male and female).  Love the breed because of their personalities not because of how they look up against other dogs.  For those people cross-breeding dogs- do more research.  It is you who are ruining some of the best dog breeds out there.  Why would you want to pay 1200 for a bullmastiff and 200 for a pitt and let them breed?  Thats beyond me!

to aldogreenock:

120lbs is large for a Rottweiler. You may want to get your weights straight when referring to different breeds and their standards. Male Rott-anywhere from 90-110lbs is the avg. breed std. Rotts are a large breed, not a giant breed.  However they are descendents of mastiffs, as are most dogs.  I have a 140lbs Boerboel(South African Mastiff) and that is a good solid healthy weight for that dog.  You show me a 200 lbs Rott and I'll show you a fatass or some sort of mastiff.  Just because the owner of the dog your looking at arbitrarily tells you a weight doesn't make it so.
