The Civil War started in April 1861 when the Confederates attacked the Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter, a base about 1 mile outside of Charleston Harbor. After 33 hours of fighting, the Union troops surrendered and in retaliation, the North or Union troops declared war on the South or Confederate troops Printer Friendly Version Pinot Grigio 2000 What�s in this wine? The Civil War was started by a bunch of idiots who made stupid comments like stuff being "Gay, when in all reality, there was no homosexual relations to be relevant to the subject. And if we're not careful, stupid people like Hank T may ressurect a new civil war. Okay, so for real. The war was caused like any other war. An issue was brought up and it created a war. Take war on religion, for instance. It's a reasonable theory to think that a religious war might break out with the influential help of Harry Potter, much like Uncle Tom's Cabin helped influenced the war on slavery. History repeats itself. And idiots like Hank T are the cause. Sorry, Hank T, I didn't mean to totally flame you. You just made a stupid comment, and I tend to rant on stupid people. Go figure.

As far as I can tell it began in April of 1861 and ended in April of 1865. This war WAS NOT COMPLETELY OVER SLAVERY. Slavery was involved as a factor and threat towards the southern states to hinder there secession. It's a common misunderstanding, but honestly it was not started over slavery. The south didn't agree over the president, nor the other political issues going on in the nation. The Missouri Compromise which was a parcel of land that was supposed to be a slave state. When it brought to the house of Representatives to forbid importation of slaves, the southern states became offended by fact of VOTE in the house, not by fact of slavery. They were more worried about the slave states having a say, than they were about SLAVE STATES in general. This was in 1820.

by 1860, cotton was the chief export of the South. while the Northern states were moving towards industrialization and manufacturing, the South opposed this and continued to be an agrarian society. a manufacturing economy does not require slave labor, but an economy that revolves around cotton does. therefore, the Southern states were very reluctant to give up their rights to own states. the Southern states also supported popular sovereignty, the idea of the states (not the federal government) deciding whether or not to allow slavery. slaveholders were afraid that a centralized federal government would take away their right to own slaves. an industrial economy required a strong central government but an agrarian economy did not. U ARE ALLLLLL STUPID

The Civil War began on April 9, 1865 when the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter. The battle was not fought just because of slavery. Slavery wasn't an important issue until later on in the war. Both sides had goals in the Civil War. The North fought to hold the Union together and the South just wanted to be independent. Their way of life was much different from the North's economy. Anyways, it ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. I could write 50 paragraphs about the Civil War without looking anything up, but why would I waste my time. I'm not trying to act all snotty or anything, but some of you are very stupid. The Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865. The Civil War started because the Southerneres wanted to become their own country. They wanted this because they thought that their votes in the presidential election and government didn't matter to the north americans. The northern states were then called the union and the southern states were called the confederacy. The north disagreed with the south breaking off from the U.S.A but couldn't do anything about it because their new president Abraham Lincoln didn't want to have to war, but said that if the south attacked them first... the war would start. The first battle was the battle at fort summet. The civil war had BEGUN!

This is the true story of the states civil war: Everything was fine until Lincoln's teddy bear lost, so he became mad and nasty as well, so he couldn�t stand it and he said to the villages, "LETS DO NASTY THINGS!!" so everybody started doing nasty stuff with him and he said "yeahhhhhh everybody yeahhhhh" until he died because of a hart attack while the nasty actions took part. After they burried Lincoln in the cavalry, the horse came along and the nasty villagers turned it into gay horse. I know all this stuff because i love my country yeah, and I love everyone yoah. Well folks, this is the true and hidden story of the civil war (DON�T BELIEVE OTHER ANSWERS ON THIS PAGE)Thats�s all folks!!

Sorry but" you are all wrong. The very wealty plantation owners.I'm talking the millionares.Who grew cotton.That cotton was shipped to Birmingham,england.Thats where the mills were. Those rich asses had slaves doing all the work While they sat on their fat asses. A slave was not cheap to buy. Then mills started springing up all over the new england states.They were againist slavery. The smart ass rich from the south. Told the Poor ignorant ass Whites.They are trying to change our way of life.. Which was bull.They weren't trying to change the poor.The poor had no slaves.They could not afford any.It was the cash flow from the rich that was in jepardy. The only white that worked for the rich ass was the Cracker.Ask any african american what the word means & why they hate it. He was the one with the Whip. He cracked it across their backs to increase production.Like you do to a horse. The poor listened to him & who went & died the poor ignorant whites that belived him. The rich transfered their money to other countrys.some of those are still the richest in the usa.Meanwhile all the stupid poor lost everything they had,life,limbs & property. Sorry if I offended any of you.But these are the facts. Just look at all the reasons they came up with to get rid of our native americans. After the native americans fed then when the white first came here.they were starving. Written by a white 71 year old Who is tired of the injustice in this country. Hey when the civil war ended were slaves pretty much free at the time they found out what happened or did it take a while for them to become free. they were techn. free after the war. many southern states did not free there slaves. slaves would try to flee to northern states and canada but were often caught and put back into slavery again. many southern whites did not agree w. the free slaves, so many secret organizations were founded. most known and notorious was the ku klux klan or the kkk. formed in tennessee in 1866 they would go around at night killing blacks. the civil war basically led into a period known as reconstruction...which had a big effect on race relations as well....hope that helps =)

The Civil War lasted from 1861 until 1865. The southern states wanted to have their own nation and be able to decide what laws to have. The north did not want the country to be broken apart. In the election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln stated that he wanted to stop the spread of slavery. The southern states said that if Lincoln won, they would secede (leave) the union. The southern states seceded from the union after Lincoln was elected. They formed their own nation, The Confederate States of America. The war began in April of 1861 when the Confederate Army took over Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. President Lincoln was forced to declare war. The war was a long and bloody. Over 600,000 men on both sides died. Over 1,100,000 were injured. The south was devastated. General Lee surrendered to General Grant on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The war was over

the Civil War started in 1861 when Southern states declared themselves independent by secession and formed the confederacy. The United States was split in half and a terrible Civil War was the result. This tax was called a tarrif. Southerners felt these tariffs were unfair and aimed toward them because they imported a wider variety of goods than most Northern people. Taxes were also placed on many Southern goods that were shipped to foreign countries, an expense that was not always applied to Northern goods of equal value. The situation grew worse after several "panics", including one in 1857 that affected more Northern banks than Southern. Southern financiers found themselves burdened with high payments just to save Northern banks that had suffered financial losses through poor investment It ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865

I know that the Civil war started in 1861, and ended in 1865. in took place at Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, and other places, and it was against the North vs. the south, not the british!! it lasted less than four years, and 365,000 people died trying to defend our Civil Rights. the reason they fought was not only to defend our rights, but to also keep our nation United. Fredrick Douglass believed the only way to unite our country was to go to war, so that's what happened, and it worked. after the civil war ended Abe Lincoln gave a speech at Gettysburg, by the graves where the soldiers who fought in it were burried. it was about 4 hours long, and everyone hated it. it is called the Gettysburg Adress, and it is a very famous speech today. Any other questions just ask me!! SO ANY CUTE BOYZ OUT THERE THAT WANNA CHAT??

How the Civil War Started� The Civil War didn�t start from the firing on Fort Sumter. It was long before Lincoln became president. Slavery was an issue back and some presidents were pro-slavery and some were not. �Bleeding Kansas� (a smaller version of the Civil War) occurred from the mid-1850s and into the early 1860s. During that time, Kansas tried to become a state, but its inhabitants were not in agreement if Kansas should be a slave or a free state. Eventually, a small war began between the two sides and it all ended after the Confederate states seceded from the Union. Many of the Northerners were concerned about the Southerners because they were against all slavery. When Lincoln was just starting out his presidential campaign, he was neutral on the slavery issue and tried to compromise with the Southerners that there will be a compromise. Soon after Lincoln was elected president of the Union, seven states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana) seceded from the Union because they didn�t support Lincoln and his policies on the slavery issue. After the Confederate army attacked Fort Sumter (a Union fort), the start of the Civil War began. Sides were taken and brothers fought against each other for pride in what they believed in. Four other states (Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina) seceded after the Confederates fired against Fort Sumter.

The civil war started because the south wanted to expand slavery into the west and the north did not. The north did not want to abolish slavery altogether. In fact, Lincoln said he did not care whether or not the slaver were free--he only wanted to preserve the union. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued after the slaves had already FREED THEMSELVES--and only freed the slaves of the south anyway. The slaves owned by northern territories remained in bondage. The Emancipation Proclamation was nothing but a war tactic on the part of the north. Before the slaves began to fight for the north, the north was losing miserabley. When the slaves went into a general strike and fled to the north, at first, they were sent back to their original owners. When the north began to see more and more slaves fleeing to the north saying they would fight and would work for a decent wage, they saw this as a chance to get on top of things. Therefore, the slaves won the war. They freed themselves and turned things around for the union. Why they don't teach this in high school, I don't know. It took a 400-level political science class in college to learn the real lesson behind the Civil War and Reconstruction. Tara Lindsey Journalism/Political Science major

Whatever you believe both sides fired their first shots in April of 61, in which there was only one fatality. A confederate horse.

Slavery was not the only thing that started the civil war. Anybody who says it was is either black or ignorant. The war started in 1861 and ended in 1865. I'm not saying that slavery was not an issue, because it was, but a lot of people that I have talked to say that slavery was the only cause, which is a lie. It was mainly over states rights, and PART of the argument of states rights did have something to do with slavery, but that was not the major ordeal. And seriously guys, if your not gonna put something usefull on this page,why put anything at all? All that your saying is, "I'm not cool but I'm trying to be so I'll put something stupid on the page and my imagenary friends will love me for it." PEOPLE, GET A LIFE!!!

The civil war started because the south wanted to become its own country. The North disagreed and had a war. Lincoln had noted that if the south agrees to fight they will be free from slavery forever. So as we know it, they did. In the end they lost but still they free from slavery.

the civil war started because of slavery and that the south wanted to be an individual country(confederate states of america). The first battle was in 1861, when confederate troops attacked the union fort sumter. it lasted 33 hours, until the union troops retreated, the confederates won.

The Civil war started because the south threatened to secede over political issues. So Abraham Lincoln threatened that if the south seceded a war would start. The south seceded anyways, and Lincoln debated with himself for many days when he finally decided to continue with the threat. Later on in the war they also fought for slavery. The war was from 1861-1865. The first battle was at Fort Sumter, and lasted 33 hours the last was at the capital the south would have chosen Richmond, Virginia.

The civil war started in April of 1861 because the south thought that they still needed slaves to help them with their crops. They didn't like that the northern states were telling them what to do so they threatened to secede from the union. They started to prepare troops and attacked some some other troops in the north. This was when the war officially started.

Every one else is right. the war started in April 1861 because the southern states wanted slavery and the union wouldn't allow it. Later the south attacked Fort Sumter and this sparked the beginning of the civil war.

the south wanted to secede from the Union because they were getting ticked off by congress pushing them around about slavery. they wished to be left alone. the union fought against them because they felt that this country could not fall apart.

the civil war started when the lazy peeps from the south wanted to be independent so they could have slaves but the hard working yankees disagreed with the south so they declared war on them. It started on April 12, 1861 in Charleston SOUTH Carolina when the con-feds opened fire on the yanks at fort sumer. It ended when general Robert e. lee surrendered to the yanks union. i know all that and still cant pass social studies. amazing huh?
