Good question ~ I copied this from <http://www.rootsweb.com/~quakers/quakinfo.htm>: "...Quakers were committed to democratic concepts & equality. As a result many Quakers were heavily involved with the emancipation movement. Quakers organized the "Underground Railroad" to aid runaway slaves find freedom. Excessive commitment to the Anti-Slavery movement caused one of the splits in the Society."

BTW, did you know President Abraham Lincoln was a Quaker great-grandson? No wonder he believed slavery was wrong!

Keep asking questions!

Abraham lincoln was incredibly racist and did not believe slavery to be evil. He was instead commited to the prevention of its spread which is one of the things that lead to the american civil war.

On the question of Quakers and war i would advise you visit www.quaker.org.uk for the full run down on why most if not all quakers are pacifists and committed to non violence.

opinions on war should not have to do any thing with how your "religion" feels about it it is how you feel about it individually even if you disagree with your religion
