how well do dogs adapt to they're surroundings perferably german sheperds

It depends greatly on age/sex and prior and current socialization of the dog. Evaluate your dog's dominance factor and Territorial traits and see first if your german shepard(s) are willing to share their space with another dog. If they are aggressive or dominant to a point where they would attack or bully another- you shouldn't get another dog. It's not fair to either. Ask a vet or animal behaviorist for more help/info.

Dogs adapt to a home easily if they are used to having to adapt.  Often socialization helps for the dog to adapt easily.
