Is there a variation of the lab breed, that generates a taller more lean male?  I have a 9 month old, akc-pure bread that has been fixed.  He weighs about 85 lbs., and is very lean and strong.  I have been told that he is unusually big for the breed. Is there a type of lab that is bigger, that doesn't fit the norm of short and stocky?

No there isn't. However there is always the smaller/bigger side of a breed and two bigger dogs could have been bred and produced bigger pups. It could also have to do with feeding and exercise it gets. If it isn't fat and is kept lean more of its growth could go into making it taller too. It's always a possibility.

You have what we call the American Lab or field variety of Lab. It's sad but there are pretty much 2 types now. The show type(short and stocky with big head)and then the field or American type which is taller and refined like a greyhound.
