What would cause the coat of my yellow lab to turn to an almost steel-wool type texture.  She is well-groomed, approximately 5-6 years old, takes daily thyroid medication(her thyroid levels are tested regularly), glucosimine and condroitan.  The vet doesn't know why this is happening, initially adjusting the thyroid dosage, however it's not getting any better.

Please help.
