1987 VW Golf GT- 3 speed auto 1.8 - sporatic starting...

1987 VW Golf GT- 3 speed auto 1.8 - sporatic starting issues- starter just replaced and still has time especially once warmed up in which turn the key and won't start.  You can here the fuel pump running but no power getting to starter- any clues?  thanks
