I have a 2000 VW Passat 4cyl. GLS Turbo. A symbol comes up...

I have a 2000 VW Passat 4cyl. GLS Turbo. A symbol comes up occasionally but no one seems to know what it means. The symbol appears on the dash before the fuel consumption reading. It is a circle with a back slash through it. I have taken it to a VW dealer, Canadian Tire and it is not in the manual for the car. It will go out for awhile than come back on. When it is on I seem to get poor gas-mileage. Hopefully someone might know what this means.
