7 weeks is the general rule of thumb.

The PA law is eight weeks of age for a puppy to be separated from its mother. Six or seven weeks is too young. I purchased a puppy at six weeks not knowing the law, and it took a long time to adjust to living without the protection of its mother. Please don't be so cruel as to knowingly scare a puppy like that.

The ideal age is at 8 weeks. Anything under 7 weeks don't get. It is too emotionally stressful for a pup to leave that early. You should meet it at 6 weeks of age though so you are not a complete stranger to it when it leaves. It will be more comfortable since leaving everything familiar to it behind is a big adjustment for a pup.

We use to do 8 weeks faithfully, but have found a 7th week release is fully successful. We feel its a breeder choice. I personally only find that keeping them the added week adds to my "clean up" experience. Whoever has ever asked for "poopdepoo" experience on a resume'?
Our Golden Retriever puppies are welped, kept indoors (house) and our adoptees have told us (some 5 years later) that our puppies are "The best dog they've ever had."  Both of us "hand hold" all puppies daily from day 1, they are as well adjusted at 6 or 7 weeks as they are at 8 weeks, and all have easily transitioned to their new family's. Our Momma Dogs are usually ready to let the nest empty!!  Those pin-needle teeth & toes are NOT missed at all.

I also purchased my bichon frise at the age of 6 weeks.. She was not emotionally stressed due to the fact that she left her mother or siblings.  If anything she received much more attention. Also, before I brought her home I brought with me a fluffy white stuffed animal and rubbed it all over her mother, brought her home put it in her cage and never once did my dog cry or show any signs of stress.  I also will be letting my puppies leave the nest at age 6weeks.. I feel that the puppies bond better to their new owners at a younger age.
