I have a VW Golf IV 2001 and at 79000km my first gear...

I have a VW Golf IV 2001 and at 79000km my first gear appears to have a problem. The others behave normal. I went to the repair shop and told me that a lot of Golf 1600cc appear to have the same problem and the gearbox needs to be opened and replaced.  Do you know anything about this rumor?
