I have a 1986 VW Jetta GLI that I've owned since brand new.  So far I have been able to fix most of the minor problems except one.  For the past one or two years I've had this strange problem.  Within the first 15 minutes of driving I would get this sudden loss of power.  I could floor the gas pedal but nothing would happen.  Only when the RPM drops down a bit would the engine kick in.  This seems to happen at different RPMs - can'rsee a good correlation there.  When I place the transmission in neutral the engine revs down to normal RPM.  The loss of power and subsequent deceleration is very notable (very jerky).
Has anyone experienced a similar problem.
Not sure if this is related but I think my gas millage has dropped a bit too.
