i have a prestolock 4 dial combination lock model# 2620, it has a feature to change the combination and the last time i attempted to change it, i messed up and forget the #s. my question is this, should i take my lock to the local shop/will a smith be able to open it? i haven't used the lock for a while and it seems a shame because it really is a nice lock, i just don't have the time to sit and go through all possible combos

I have a prestolock 4 dial combination lock model# 2620,I got this lock in a lot of locks i purchased. I do not have the combination. I went to the website and found out there are 10,000 possibilities. Is there any way to pick this lock?

If you still have the lock, it can easily be opened but it takes practice.  I own a storage business and I use a lot of Presto locks.  They occasionally do get messed up and by rotating the dials and feeling the response as you turn them, they can usually be opened within 10 minutes.

Any 4 dial lock can eventually be unlocked by trying up to all (10,000) combinations.  At about 1 1/2 seconds per try, takes up to 4 hours, less if you are lucky.  Could do it over a few nights while watching TV.  (Been there, done that).

The last paragraph on the card says: "Record your combination in a safe and accessible place for future reference.  The lock cannot be repaired at the factory should you forget the combination."

With a four digit combination it is 4 to the 4th power, so there are 256 possible combinations.  Personally the only answer is to throw it away, buy a new one and consider it a lesson learned.

PRESTOLOCK

Operating Instructions

This PRESTOLOCK product is the latest development in keyless security devices.  The combination lock is set at the factory to open at 0-0-0 when aligned between the arrows.  You may leave it at this setting if you wish and always open the lock by turning the dials to 0-0-0 or you can set your own combination on the three dials in the following manner:

Step #1: Open lock by turning the dials to 0-0-0 and pull out shackle.

Step #2: Turn shackle 180 degrees in either direction and push in as far as possible.

Step #3: Hold shackle depressed and turn shackle 90 degrees (quarter turn). Leave shackle in this position.  You are now ready to set combination.

Step #4: Turn dials to desired combination.

Step #5: Without disturbing the dials return shackle a quarter way around, 90 degrees (the shackle should be in the same position as step #2). Pull out shackle and turn pulled out shackle around 180 degrees and push in shackle to lock.  Your lock will now open with your new combination.  If you want to change to a new combination simply repeat steps 1-5.
