just bought my son a used 1990 Jetta GLI 16V in well maintained (mechanic owner) excellent condition with all maintenance and major repairs up to date. Driving on freeway about 60 mph suddenly lost power but was able to continue. Car limped along after getting off hwy with loud hissing sound emitted from behind engine. Any ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Have you checked the throttle body Boot from the intake,  Also the vacuum system is very important your car will run very poor when a leak happens even the slightest.  Your fuel injection system has to have full vacuum to operate.

You should check the alternator because it might be draining the battery power.
