I am having trouble getting my 1 year old black lab to walk on the leash without pulling aggressively when we meet people.

Getting a anti-pulling harness would be a good thing to do.  Get a utensil that makes a high pitched noise that only a dog can hear. Then put on the harness. When he acts like that, whistle the utensil as to scare him and yank him back. Do this continually with lots of praise when he stops or doesn't act aggressively at all. This should work. Also, your dog should be socialized with people to learn he does not need to be aggressive. He might be trying to protect you. You need to teach him that there is no need. Good luck! Tanisha

I am getting a lab puppy, and they have a new type of leash now. Its called a snapper (or something to that effect). When the dog pulls to forward, the leash will snap (its kind of like the sound that 2 belts make when pulled together) and the dog will stop. It doesn't ever hurt them, but this may just work for you guys.

Have you tried a Gentle Leader or a Halti, head collars? They are Not muzzles but work with the dogs natural instinct to stop when their nose is pulled down. Most react instantly to this.  These also do allow constant pressure on the neck.  The problem with a chest harness is that dogs tend to actually pull more with the pressure on the chest. My dog is a 3yr old lab mix and has a Halti. She is a changed dog with it than without.  She seems to actually have manners!!
