1991 gt2 1.8L scirocco.problem:-there seems to be 2 timing...

1991 gt2 1.8L scirocco.problem:-there seems to be 2 timing marks on the flyweel,for setting the ignition timing,one of which i imagine is T.D.C.Iv'e tried setting on each one in turn,results as follows.1-mark(engine pings dramatically on load,runs cool,power ok).2-mark(engine runs very hot but no pinging,power ok) any ideas???? thanks.

one mark is TDC one is 6 degrees advanced
where it should be set.
