I have a 1975 , fuel injected vw beetle. My alternator lite in the dash does not glow when the key is turned to the on position. My vw does not have an ( external ??) voltage regulator.  it has 3 wires connected to the top rear and a large red wire connected at the top mid position, (this red wire is connected to the positive terminal of the battery).  Question how do I test to see if my alternator is working correctly.   Please use vvvverrrry simple instructions.   thanks

If there are 3 wires and one large red wire attached to the alternator, you have an external regulator under the rear seat (left side). If the light does not come on when turning on the ignition, the alternator won't work because it uses the resistance of the small light for startup of charging. Check out why the light doesn't work. There should be a blue wire running from the regulator to the light in the speedometer. This wire should have no voltage with engine not running. With engine running there should be 12-14 volts. With internal regulator this blue wire runs directly from the speedometer to the top of the alternator.
A proper working alternator should produce a voltage of 13.5 to 14.5 volts at the battery terminals with engine idling.

Check if you have 12 volts at the battery on idle and 14.5 to 16 volts when running . ALSO check if the belt is connected and check if THE CHARGING LIGHT IS FUNCTIONING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem, try changing the small globe where the alternator wire connects to the speedometer
