What is a smeghead?

It's from a BBC series "Red Dwarf"

They use 'smeg' as an insult

'What the smeg was that'
'I don't give a smeg'
... like that

So a Smeghead is pretty funny :)

Fantastic show. If you haven't seen it, you should.

The above description of "smeghead" is correct.  But there's more.

"Smeg" is an abbreviation for "smegma".  Smegma is defined as:

A sebaceous secretion, especially the cheesy secretion that collects under the prepuce or around the clitoris.

So, in the context of "You're a smeghead" or "Smeg!"  or "Smeg off!"...you get the idea.

It seems to me that it is a substitute for a certain bodily function or the fruit of the function. In other words s**t.

Not quite right. The creators say smeg has nothing to do with smegma, officially. with a wink.

According to Grant Naylor, "smeg" is a made-up word.

Due to content-constraints the BBC puts on the shows they broadcast (quite similar to US "broadcast censoring" and Canadian "broadcast standards and practices", for example), actual "four-letter" words were not allowed on the air. As a result, Grant and Naylor invented the word "smeg" as a futuristic "four-letter word" - a word that had the spoken vehemence and a suitable vowel-consonant combination to sound like something really mean, definately insulting, and possibly vile... and all this without violating the BBC'sregulations on "foul language".

So, "smeghead" actually has no meaning, as it's based on a word that doesn't really exist, outside of Red Dwarf and the related fan-base. However, from episode and dialogue context - mainly Lister's utterance of "smeg!" whenever something went wrong or got on his pecs - we can safely assume that "smeg" is similar to "sh*t", making "smeghead" similar to "sh*thead".The OED has no entry for "smeg", so it doesn't officially exist as a word. However, the word - and various combinations, such as "smeghead" - do have a limited but very live usage.

Eventually, OED may enter "smeg". After all, the Simpsons got "d'oh entered... ;-)

I remember one of the Red Dwarf producers once said that "smeg" as used in Red Dwarf insults is not related to "smegma" - smeg was supposed to be a made-up word for the show just like "goit". Smeg and Goit have both entered popular useage so it's hard to verify the producer's statement.

Both the above descriptions of 'What Is A smeghead' are correct, though during the show of Red Dwarf, they often used the word 'Smeg!' like in the phrase 'Smeg! I'm late!' as a substitute for words like 'Sh*t!' or 'F**k!' so using that context, instead of saying 'Shut the F**king Hell up!' (STFHU for 'netspeak') you could say 'Shut The Smegging Hell Up' (STSHU! for 'netspeak') instead. (note: i actually partial-censored the 2 main words which really get on some people's goats because "they don't approve of swearing".)

Obviously Red Dwarf was too much of a family show to have the characters effing and blinding so 'smeg' was used to keep the Beeb's censors happy.

Actually, 'smeg' is not derived from 'smegma' at all. It appears to be just a coincidence.

IN fact, the word 'smeg' and associated terms (smeghead, smegging smeg of a smegger, etc.) were actually in use in Britain in the 1970's, especially with teenage boys and the 'punk' group in particular. I can just see Joe Strummer telling a police officer to 'smeg off'. :)

Bad Bob Barber, it is you that is the smeghead, there is no more than Salogel mentioned.  The Red Dwarf insult "smeg" never originated from smegma, but was instead created because of it's phonetic qualities.

"Smeg" was adapted for use by the crew of the popular BBC TV sitcom, Red Dwarf, and comes from the word smegma, which describes the yellowy, cheesy substance found on the end of dirty penises and grimey clits.

a "smeg" is a very smelly substance that forms under the foreskin or around the opening of your vagina coursed by not washing around them areas if you have this so called "smeg" the best way to get rid of it is to have a good wash around there.
but if you are getting called it then there is nothing to worry about it is just a phrase from the show "red dwarf"
