I have a 2.0l 16 valve turbo vw. The conversion was very succesfull, but i have an irritating problem. The car smokes on idle when cold, and between gear shifts it puffs white smoke, but not when under acceleration(load). The turbo and engine are new, i have been told that my return from the turbo to the sump is not big enough and the oil is forcing past the turbo seals, can this be the case?

Just one thing, have you got the actuator hose connected, or has it ever come off? if so it can melt piston rings and make an engine act like that. Run the motor and take the oil cap off. If you get any smoke out of there, I'd say thats the problem.

I have the same problem with my VW turbo converted. It was the turbine exhaust seal, combined with a poor designed oil drain. The reason that it doesn't smoke under load is that the exhaust pressure is so high that it prevents the oil to pass thru the seals. When at idle, that pressure drops and the oil begins to enter the exhaust tube.
Check your turbo and be sure to have a good oil drain. At least use a 3/4" tube for the drain, and be sure that it enters the crank case above the oil level. Also be sure that the tube do not make tight curves. Sorry for my english. I'm from Argentina. good luck!

TRY REDUCING YOUR oIL PRESSURE TO THE TURBO, VW'SPRODUCE TO HIGH OF OIL PRESSURE.
