When a mother stops feeding the pups, it send a message to the body to stop producing milk. However, it shouldn't be a sudden stop. It should be a gradual thing over the time the pups are being weaned. As the pups eat more food, they will nurse less and less and the mother can gradually reduce her milk production. If your pups are less that 2 or 3 weeks old and the mother is refusing to nurse them, seek medical attention.
