PVCS stands for Polytronic Version Control System. This allows you to track changes to software, to maintain multiple versions, and to undo changes that did not work out.

PVCS'soriginal [early 80's] vendor was a company called Polytron, in the mid 90's they changed their name to Merant. Summer of 2004 they were acquired by Serena.

PVCS is quite similar to RCS, with the minor difference that revision numbers start at 1.0 instead of 1.1

PVCS'sone innovation was the distinction of 'version' labels as a separate entity from file revisions, and the ability to get files by version label.

PVCS should now be considered a legacy system, as you will find no mention of it on its current owner's website.

Make that "Polytron Version Control System". "Polytron" was the original company before Intersolve and Merant and Serena.

PVCS stands for "Polytron Version Control System" (not "Polytronic")
The product originated at a company named Polytron, which also made "Polymake", "Polyawk", and "Polyshell".  These were Unix-like tools for DOS -- Polyshell provided a Unix shell on DOS, much like MKS or Cygwin now provide.
Through a merger Polytron became Sage Software; after that they were Intersolv, then Merant, and is currently (2006-Jan-27) Serena -- all through mergers and acquisitions.
The name "Polytron Version Control System" was always abbreviated to PVCS, but now PVCS refers to the product line: PVCS Version Manager is the current name of the original PVCS product. Polymake became PVCS Configuration Builder (a.k.a Config Builder)
The AWK and shell products were dropped long ago, and Config Builder was recently replaced by "ChangeMan Builder" which I believe is based on openmake technology (http://www.openmake.com/dp/home/)
[Credentials: I have been using PVCS products since 1985, when it was still Polytron, and have seen all these changes. I currently work for a company doing ports of PVCS, under license from Serena, to a variety of Unix systems not supported by Serena.]
