My dog would not sleep in her whelper.
Although when she went into labour I put her in it and since the pups have been born she has not left there.

Some dogs won't like the confined space of a whelping box.  Following the guidance of CCI, I would recommend whelping the puppies in a large plastic kiddie pool.  Put down old blankets on the bottom and lightly shredded newspaper on top.

Just don't put your dog in the whelping box before she has her pups . When she is about to have her pups , she will look for a place to settle and deliver. They know what that box is for. Don't worry.

We used a small front room that has a window that was previously an extra closet in our master bedroom. Placing a doggy door on the closet door works perfect along with large pet-taxi inside.  We took your advice and shredded our newspaper on top of the blanket inside the taxi.  We also put a lamp, a large puppy pillow and plenty of food and water inside.  She has free rain of her mini-apartment with her pups in the taxi nearby.  Think "outside the 'box'" to keep your pets in theirs.
